What you get

A system sized to your house

How much backup you need depends on what you want running and for how long. I work that out with you at the quote, before anyone orders equipment.

Installed start to finish by me

One person from the quote to the final test. No crew, no subcontractors, and nobody learning on your house.

Permit and inspection handled

I file the paperwork, pay the fee, and meet the inspector. Where a permit is required, it's in the price.

What the system is actually made of

People say “battery” like it's one box. It's usually four or five parts, and knowing what each one does makes the quote a lot easier to read.

Where it all goes matters too. Batteries have a temperature range they work best in, so an unheated garage through a Colorado winter is worth talking about before anything gets mounted to a wall.

Whole house, or just what matters

Backing up every circuit takes a bigger system than most people expect. Backing up the things you actually care about - fridge, furnace, internet, a few outlets, the well pump if you have one - usually costs less and runs longer on the same battery.

Neither one is the right answer for everybody. It comes down to what you want running at two in the morning in February, and what you want to spend. I'll lay both out at the quote with a real number on each.

Which brands I install

I'm not certified for the Tesla Powerwall, so I don't install those. I'd rather say that up front than take the job and work it out later.

Brands I can install include EcoFlow, EG4 and FranklinWH. Some manufacturers only let installers they've trained and certified touch their equipment, and that list moves around, so if you already have a brand in mind, bring it up when I come out and I'll tell you straight whether I can do it.

I'm not a dealer for any battery brand, so I have no reason to point you at one over another.

Battery or generator?

A battery is silent, switches over on its own, and there's no fuel to store or keep fresh. It runs until it's empty, and then it needs sun or grid power to fill back up.

A generator keeps going as long as you keep feeding it. It's louder, it needs fuel and maintenance, and a lot of them need you to go out and start them.

Plenty of people end up with one or the other for good reasons, and some end up with both. If you're weighing it up, the generator page covers that side. I'm happy to price both so you're comparing real numbers instead of guessing.

Common questions

How long will it run my house?

It depends on the size of the battery and what you leave switched on. A fridge, some lights and your internet is a very different draw from an air conditioner and an electric dryer. At the quote I go through what you want covered and give you an honest estimate rather than a brochure number.

Do I need solar for it to be worth it?

No. A battery charges from the grid too, so it works as backup on its own. Solar changes the math on refilling it during a long outage, and most systems can have solar added later if you want to go that way.

Can I add more battery later?

Often yes, and it's worth asking before you buy. Systems differ on how far they expand and whether the extra has to match what you already have. I'll check that for the specific system you're considering.

Will it work with my panel?

That's one of the first things I look at. Some installations tie in cleanly, others need panel work first. If yours needs an upgrade I'll tell you at the quote rather than partway through the job - see panel upgrades.

Do I need a permit?

That's up to your town and I check for your address. Where one is needed I pull it, pay the fee, and meet the inspector. It's in the price.

Is it noisy?

There's no engine, so nothing like a generator. Most systems have cooling fans that you may hear up close, but it isn't something the neighbors will notice.

How much does it cost?

It moves a lot with the size of the system and how much of the house you're backing up, so a number over the phone would be a guess. I come out, look at your panel and where the equipment would go, and give you a flat written price before anything starts.

Why most people dread hiring an electrician

Everyone has a story about a contractor. Here's what usually goes wrong, and what I do instead.

What usually happensWhat I do

They show up late (or not at all).

I show up on time.

They buy cheap materials.

I buy better materials than the job calls for.

They cut corners.

I think things through.

They leave a mess.

I clean up after myself.

They might be underinsured or unlicensed.

I carry proper insurance and licensing.

They may have a criminal history.

I'm background checked with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

They charge by the hour, so you don't know what you'll actually pay.

I quote a flat price, and I stick to it.

They send whoever's available - often an apprentice.

I do every job myself.

They sell you as much as they can, even if you don't need it.

I want to earn your business for the long-term.

I take pride in doing it right, the first time.
