What you get
A quality panel that lasts
I prefer Square D and Siemens - both are still widely made, so breakers stay easy to find years from now. If you want a different brand, I'll install that instead.
Every circuit protected properly
A new main switch and a good breaker on every circuit in the house.
The grounding brought up to date
The grounding system is what gives electricity a safe path out of your house. On older homes it's often the part that was never finished.

When a panel actually needs replacing
Not every old panel has to go. Some do.
A few brands - Federal Pacific and Zinsco are the well-known ones - have a long history of breakers that don't shut off when they're supposed to. Some Challenger equipment was recalled too. If you have one of those, replacing it isn't an upgrade. It's fixing something that was never safe.
Past that, the honest reasons are simple: you're out of room for new circuits, you're adding something big like a car charger or a hot tub, or the panel is corroded or damaged.
If your panel is fine, I'll tell you it's fine.
What the day looks like
Your power is off for most of a working day. I'll give you the window when I quote it.
I take out the old panel, put in the new one, move every circuit over, and go through the grounding. Where the power company needs to disconnect and reconnect the line, I arrange that too.
Then I label every breaker. Not "bedroom" - the actual room and what's on it. If you ever need to shut something off in a hurry, you shouldn't have to guess.
Common questions
How long will my power be out?
Usually most of one working day. I'll tell you the window up front and let you know if anything about your setup changes it.
Do you handle the permit and inspection?
Yes - the paperwork, the fee, and meeting the inspector. It's part of the price.
Do I need a bigger service?
It depends on what your home actually uses, not on what's fashionable. I'll add it up. Plenty of houses are fine as they are.
Can you just replace the breakers instead?
If that's genuinely the fix, yes. If the panel itself is the problem, new breakers are money spent on the wrong thing.
What's the warranty?
Lifetime on my work. Two years on parts, which is twice what most give you.
Why most people dread hiring an electrician
Everyone has a story about a contractor. Here's what usually goes wrong, and what I do instead.
They show up late (or not at all).
I show up on time.
They buy cheap materials.
I buy better materials than the job calls for.
They cut corners.
I think things through.
They leave a mess.
I clean up after myself.
They might be underinsured or unlicensed.
I carry proper insurance and licensing.
They may have a criminal history.
I'm background checked with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
They charge by the hour, so you don't know what you'll actually pay.
I quote a flat price, and I stick to it.
They send whoever's available - often an apprentice.
I do every job myself.
They sell you as much as they can, even if you don't need it.
I want to earn your business for the long-term.
I take pride in doing it right, the first time.
